Becoming a Licensed KiddyKeys® Teacher Is Professionally and Personally Rewarding
KiddyKeys Program Creators Kris Skaletski and Darlene Rich Every long journey begins with one important first step. Our journey with KiddyKeys began with a confident step into the unknown. We were inspired to create a music discovery and piano preparation program devoted to young children. Our instinct told us that KiddyKeys needed to be uniquely educational, highly engaging, and above all, focused on the inherent value of each child. We began teaching KiddyKeys in Green Bay, Wisconsin during the summer of 2003. In the summer of 2007, after years of effort, thousands of hours of hard work, determination, creating, writing, proving, field-testing, revising, teaching and marketing, we excitedly launched the KiddyKeys Licensing Program. Our labor of love has produced two years of lesson plans, activity sheets for each lesson, registered trademarks, original KiddyKeys story books, a CD of KiddyKeys songs, finger plays, games, a comprehensive training, teaching and marketing package and more. Our efforts created the well-orchestrated program that KiddyKeys is today. You can own your own business and teach KiddyKeys with ease because we have taken care of everything for you! One question I had when deciding to become licensed to teach KiddyKeys was "am I qualified enough?" I'm more than confident working with young children as I've taught preschool for years. I've always had a love of music, but my background and any formal training I've had is in vocal music, not piano. Kris and Darlene reassured me that KiddyKeys is a program geared to, and written especially for, young children. One does not need to play the piano to be able to teach KiddyKeys. . Presented in a kid friendly manner through story books, hands-on materials, rhythm instruments and movement to music, this program not only introduces little ones to the world of music and basic piano concepts, but intriques and excites them to want to learn more. After reading through the well planned out lessons and one of the story books that teaches the postiion of the white piano key D as a Dog with the 2 Black Keys as it's ears, I realized just how wonderfully age appropriate this program by Kris and Darlene is, and that anyone with a love of music and small children can teach it. I became licensed in December and gave myself two months to become thoroughly familiar with the lessons. By simply bringing information into the preschool I work at, and also word of mouth, I started my first two classes out of my home in March. An issue that concerned me when first considering licensing was the fact that I live in a smaller city. I wondered how receptive the people in my community would be. It is now June, only four months into teaching, with flyers and information posted at schools, around the city, at home day cares, a dance studio and at the recreation department. I am now running ten classes out of my home and at one day care. I have already recovered my initial investment, and then some. Thanks Kris and Darlene for the opportunity to have my own business, giving me the freedom to pick my own hours and work out of my home.
